BA (Combined Honours) Christian Theology & Biblical Studies

4 years, part-time, 6 - 9pm, 1 evening per week, beginning September 2013. The course is delivered and validated in partnership with Liverpool Hope University.

The 4 year part time BA (Combined Honours) Christian Theology & Biblical Studies is an ideal way to gain a degree for people who are looking for a flexible, cost effective way to combine in depth study with work or family commitments.

What career opportunities will I have with this degree?

Christian Theology and Biblical Studies graduates are well placed to train as teachers who specialise in Religious Education especially in church schools. The study of Christian Theology and Biblical Studies develops highly-transferable skills of critical thinking, analysis and debate. Christian Theology promotes reflective engagement with contemporary ethical, social, political, religious and cultural issues whilst Biblical Studies promotes an awareness of the importance of cultural context, the historical perspective and literary-critical theory. These subject knowledge and transferable skills will help prepare you for a career in a variety of professions and employers and graduates in this area often find that the subject provides an excellent foundation for the development of a career in such areas as teaching, journalism, law, charity work, healthcare, counselling and psychotherapy. More particularly the study of Christian Theology may provide you with the comprehensive education required to follow a religious vocation and/or prepare you for postgraduate study in Theology or a cognate subject. Other career opportunities for students may include working within museums and historical archives.

How is this course assessed?

At level C (1) in Christian Theology you’ll have: a preliminary exercise to help you begin to work at degree level in this subject; an essay; an assessment based on your participation in online sessions; a portfolio built up in your independent study time, including some online interaction with other students and your tutor; an exam. At level C (1) in Biblical Studies you’ll have: a preliminary exercise to help you begin to work at degree level in this subject; an essay; an assessment based on your participation in online sessions; a portfolio of exegetical exercises completed in class and built up in your independent study time, including some online interaction with other students and your tutor; an exam. At level I (2) in Christian Theology you’ll have: an essay; an assessment based on your participation in online sessions; a portfolio of written work completed in independent study time; an exam. At level I (2) in Biblical Studies you’ll have: a New Testament textual analysis; an assessment based on your participation in online sessions; a portfolio of extra-canonical reading; an exam. At level H (3)in Christian Theology you’ll have: a Research Project*; an essay; an assessment based on your participation in online sessions; an exam..At level H (3)in Biblical Studies you’ll have: a Research Project*; a New Testament textual analysis; an assessment based on your participation in online sessions; an exam.*The two research projects may be combined into a single longer dissertation.

Fees and Finance

You pay nothing up-front!!! You are able to get a loan to cover the cost of tuition fees and you do not have to start repaying the loan until you have finished your studies and are earning at least £21,000 per year.

What do I need to get on the course?

A range of qualifications may be suitable to meet entry requirements. Experienced candidates who do not meet standard entry requirements may be offered an alternative assessment paper.

How do I apply?

Students are advised to arrange an informal initial advice meeting with a Holy Cross University Centre Support Tutor. You will then be asked to complete a paper application form and send it to Holy Cross University Centre.
