blood and organ donation - documentary
In recent years Holy Cross has hosted visits from a speaker, Graham Brushett, to initiate discussions about blood and organ donations with our Upper Sixth students. Graham himself was initially contacted by Adam Crizzle, a campaigner who lost his wife because a donor could not be found. Adam’s aim was to make a film to highlight the issues with government strategy and, as a college who supports Graham, we were asked to take part in the film.
Adam arranged for a film crew to come in to Holy Cross, meet students who Graham had delivered his talk too and to interview staff involved about the impact and importance of the talks. Adam is still on the campaign trail, meeting with Anne Milton MP, Parliamentary Under Secretary of State for Public Health to discuss the progress of the ‘Give and Let Live Education Programme’ (the Government’s blood and organ donation education programme). As part of his preparation he edited the original film and has produced a four minute documentary that was to be played to the Minister during their discussions. new teaching block on the abbeyfield site
Construction of a new teaching block is due to start in March 2012 on the Abbeyfield Templeton House site located between the existing college grounds and Parkhills Garage. An artists impression of this is shown here. The building is due to be completed in February 2013. Investment in the new facilities is valued at £4m, a cost which includes the fitting out of the new structure which will include 16 classrooms and a new chapel and chaplaincy facility. This will be a major feature with some of the items from the original Daughters of The Cross Chapel reinstated.
The new building will allow some other departments the space to expand within the existing facilities available at Holy Cross. For example, the Visual Arts department will be allocated the top floor of the Maureen Haverty building in addition to its current space.

bank of england economics competition
Four of our A level Economics students recently took part in a compettion organised by the Bank of England and The Times newspaper. The ‘Bank of England Target 2.0’ competition is the country’s premier competition available for A level Economics students. Hundreds of teams from across the country compete and each team of 4 students has to present its case on how it would manage interest rates to best achieve the Bank of England’s 2.0% inflation target. Presentations last 15 minutes, the students have to analyse a wide range of up-to-date economic data to demonstrate their understanding of the current state of the UK economy, and are delivered to a panel of judges from the Bank of England and The Times newspaper. These are followed by a plenary session at the end when the panel ask the teams questions. The winners of each regional heat go through to a county level competition and the winners of those go through to the national final. Erik Burgess, Jack Davies, Aneesa Hussain and Sanyia Qureshi represented Holy Cross at this event, finishing in the top eight teams in the regional event held in Leeds. Congratulations to them and their teacher, Criag Hunt.
