maths goes viral!

MATHS GOES VIRAL!
Holy Cross College maths teacher Emma Johnson has recently swapped the classroom for a film studio. Emma spent the 2 weeks of the Easter holidays in a film studio in Bristol, filming bite sized A level maths videos. Emma fought off stiff competition to be chosen as the online A level maths teacher for the company Stuck Ltd. The idea is that if a student is struggling with a new concept, they can get on their mobile, tablet or laptop and watch the lesson clip.

The company have 2 websites; www.stuckforschools.com – which is an online resource used by subscribing schools to assist the teaching of KS3 and KS4 maths, and www.stuckonhomework.com – which is an online resource that individuals can subscribe to. The company wanted to develop on-line material for A level – suitable for all exam boards – which it hopes will available from September 2013. Emma filmed about 120 short lessons to help with the Pure part of the Maths A level course and has also filmed material for the Mechanics 1 module.

Emma said, “I feel that the experience has helped me to improve my teaching as I had to really think about the key concept that I wanted to deliver in each clip to explain the maths. The filming was great fun, but very tiring! I’m glad to now be back in my usual role at Holy Cross!”

britain’s got talent hits holy cross!!

Britain’s Got Talent Hits Holy Cross!!
Students and staff at Holy Cross College in Bury recently held a talent show to raise funds for the British Red Cross (BRC) in its support for the present crisis in Syria. As Holy Cross has a student run branch of the BRC it was felt that an event showcasing the talents of students and staff at the College (and the dubious musical abilities of the staff band making a return to the stage after many years) would be a great way to achieve this; the student group being a particular example of the opportunities available for those attending Holy Cross to make a practical difference on issues they feel particularly strongly about.

The show was opened by the college Jazz Band who were followed by seven acts before the interval. Six acts took the show through to the judging during which the staff band played - much to the frustration of spectators!! The two hour show was enjoyed by a very generous audience and contributions on the evening and through a cake sale the following week raised £653.27 in total for the charity.

The show, hosted by staff member Mark Weatherall (who also performed his own version of ‘Mr. Cellophane’ from the musical ‘Chicago’) was judged by a panel of four staff members with a (limited) wealth of experience in the music industry. The competition was won by ‘The Message’ (students Samuel Olutayo, Anthonia Medoye, Benedict Dadebo, Mary Odubanjo, Toritseju Lori and Grace Ubawuchi) with their gospel version of ‘We Worship You’. A special mention was also made for runner-up Zeeshan Azad.
