holy cross host b.p.s. student careers event
Tuesday the 26th June saw Holy Cross College host a British Psychological Society student careers event. The half day event, organised by the BPS North West branch welcomed over 70 Psychology AS level students from Holy Cross and Bury College. Student delegates listened to engaging and informative talks from the visiting Chartered Psychologists on a "typical day" and the various progression routes into Forensic, Clinical, Educational, Occupational, Counselling and Health psychology. Thank you very much to the visiting speakers for generously giving up their time to come and speak to students. Feedback from students and teachers was very positive and the information gathered during the event will be especially useful to students as they start to consider university options.

cafod donation
This week Holy Cross has sent off the fantastic sum of £1354.71 to CAFOD which will equate to £2709.42 when matched by the Government’s promise to double CAFOD collections during the Lenten season.
A very big thank you to everyone who donated money: £596.73 came from RE collections; £539.20 from the Library Charity fund; £128 from Student Services and the remainder from collection boxes in the canteen, chaplaincy, reception and library.
This sum should provide enough for the installation of a community borehole to supply water to a whole village.

one of the top 5 science students in the uk!
Holy Cross student Niall Briggs was chosen by staff in the Biology Department to take one of the Nuffield Bursary placements at Manchester University last summer. Having completed this he presented his findings in November and was consequently awarded the ‘Science Gold Crest Award’ for his work. This was then put forward for the National Science and Engineering competition. He received confirmation from the organisation confirming that he had made the national finals in Birmingham at the ‘Big Bang: UK Young Scientists and Engineers Fair’ on 15-17 March 2012 at The NEC Birmingham.
Entries were judged on the first of three days at the event with further judging and moderation on the second day followed by a public showcasing of all finalists on the third day.
At the competition where 360 projects had been entered, the top 5 were shortlisted for a "Dragon's Den" style celebrity judging event, Niall was one of the 5! The judges included Professor Jim Al-Khalili OBE, Vivienne Parry OBE, Professor Molly Stevens and Nobel Prize winning biochemist Sir Tim Hunt. As you may imagine it was a very memorable experience for Niall! After an intense few days he was awarded with a "Highly Commended" in the Senior Science and Maths Category, so he can proudly say he is one of the top 5 young scientists in the UK! - should look good on the CV!
Niall (pictured centre following presentations of medals) said, “My project allowed me to explore the world of research science and I found it a fascinating experience, especially for an A level student like me. It also helped me to define what type of career I would like to pursue in the future. But to be awarded a Gold Crest Award and a place in the National Science and Engineering Competition Finals as well was the icing on the cake!”

french exchange at holy cross
Students from our partner school, Lycée Thomas Corneille, in Rouen, Northern France, first came to us in March 2011 at the instigation of one of our ex-students, Katie Fisher, who at the time was doing her ‘year abroad’ as an English assistant at the school. As the visit was so successful, they decided to repeat it this year and also invited staff and students from Holy Cross to spend a day in their school as part of our next trip to France.
Students from the Lycée Corneille were back in the UK in early March, staying near Rhyl and enjoying excursions to Manchester, Liverpool, Ironbridge and a day in Holy Cross going to lessons. March 26th - 30th saw our first College visit to Rouen, staying in a hotel near the centre. From there our students went out to Bayeux (the Tapestry), Arromanches (the D-Day landing beaches), Honfleur, and a Calvados farm near Pont L'Evêque. All our students were attached to a ‘partner’ at the Lycée Corneille, who took them to lessons in school. Several of our students have plans to keep in contact with their partners via e-mail and Facebook, and through family visits in the future.

ellie whitehead and ruth anderson
Holy Cross students Ellie Whitehead and Ruth Anderson have recently been selected to represent Great Britain in the Women’s U20s Handball Squad. The squad competed in the 2012 World Championship Qualification Tournament in Poland, which took place from 5-7 April, a great learning experience for all involved. This is the squad that will form the basis of the GB Team for the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro. We are sure you will agree this is a brilliant achievement and opportunity for both Ellie and Ruth and one worth celebrating. In the attached photo Ellie is front row, 4th from left, Ruth, back row, 6th from left.

kpmg business game
Holy Cross' Business Department took 12 students to Manchester Grammar School recently to compete in the annual KPMG ‘Business Game’. Students were split into two teams of 6, one consisting of 6 boys, one of 6 girls. Both teams did really well, with the girls team winning the event. They beat off strong competition from Manchester Grammar School, Aquinas College (Stockport) and Poynton High School.
The game involved analysing data and reports to assess a company's performance and they then had to present their findings to a panel of judges. The girls have been invited to KPMG's Manchester office, to have a look round and will be given guidance on how to perform in interviews. Following this, each student will then be interviewed by KPMG and the best 'candidate' will be given a 4 week paid placement over the summer - so a great opportunity for our students. All students performed really well and were a credit to the college.
