“What did the Romans ever do for us?” might be a bit of a joke, but if you are interested in finding out about what the world we live in inherited from Greece and Rome this could be the course for you. This subject combines aspects of literature, history, architecture and study of society to look at the world of the ancient Greeks and Romans.
Classical Civilisation is a useful subject as it is well regarded by most universities, for students who want to go on to study English, philosophy, theology, archaeology, history or ancient history as well as career related degrees such as law. It will equip you for the world of work through developing your ability to analyse, assess and express ideas, as well encouraging you to look at societies that had many similarities with, but also many differences to our own.
For AS you will study 2 modules, the first on women in Ancient Athens and Rome and the second on Roman Architecture and Town Planning. The first unit involves looking at a variety of written sources such as letters, speeches, and comments on women - all made by men! We also look at some drama to see how the Athenians saw the female half of the population. The second unit studies Roman architecture and building techniques, focusing on houses, baths, temples and water supplies in cities such as Pompeii, Ostia and Rome itself. The A2 course is more of a traditional history course. We will study 2 all time great figures from world history - Alexander the Great who expanded Greek influence as far as India and Augustus, the first of the Roman Emperors.
