Dance at Holy Cross is offered as part of the A Level Dance course and is also offered to all students on an extra-curricular basis. The A level subject combines practical, theory and choreography classes. The two year course is assessed equally by performance based coursework, and a practical and written examination. Practical exam work is assessed by a visiting external examiner. The workshops cover various dance styles including modern, ballet and contemporary dance, working to develop strength and technique. Students will also analyse live and pre recorded dance performances and be given the opportunity to work with professional practitioners to develop their knowledge and skills. Visiting workshop opportunities have included practitioners from Chicago and Fosse the musical, Dance Theatre of Harlem, The Richard Alston Dance Company, Rambert Dance Company, Matthew Bourne and The Shobana Jeyasingh Dance Company. Dance students are given links with local theatre companies and encouraged to further their performance skills. Extra-curricular dance is offered at lunch times and incorporates street dance, ballet, contemporary dance and Latin American classes, these classes require no prior experience. Production classes invite all students to get involved in the annual musical production in either dance, drama, music or on the technical and backstage side of the production team.
Many students have furthered their dance interest in higher education at full time theatre and dance schools and at universities.
