We follow the WJEC specification. This consists of two modules – one exam and coursework. The exam is on poetry (including a text you won’t have seen before) and two prose texts that you will have studied in class. For coursework, you will do a piece of creative writing and an accompanying commentary. The exam is worth 60% of the AS grade and coursework is worth 40%. A2 follows a similar pattern of two modules. The coursework is in two parts. Part one asks you to write an extended essay on two plays. For part two, you will write two plays of your own. The exam largely consists of comparing texts – both unseen and prepared. We take a variety of approaches to teaching and learning so lessons consist of many different types of activities in order to accommodate peoples’ different learning styles. The sorts of things you can expect to do range from games in class to independent research to extended essay writing. It goes without saying that you should enjoy reading and be prepared to do a great deal of this. You will be taught by enthusiastic and knowledgeable staff who will be as keen as you are to ensure that you reach your full potential. We expect a lot from you but you can also expect a lot from us. You can be sure of our full support throughout the course in helping you to progress. You will have many opportunities to take part in extracurricular activities including trips, theatre visits, visits by outside writers and writing workshops .
