Film Studies

Film Studies is an interesting, engaging and contemporary course. It offers the opportunity to study all aspects of film including the contexts in which films are made, distributed and viewed by audiences around the world. It will encourage intellectual debate about the role of film and is an excellent choice or students who are academic, enthusiastic and highly motivated.

Future Prospects

Studying this subject can lead to a university degree in Film or a related area such as Media or Cultural Studies. It can lead to a degree that has a practical or theoretical basis or a combination of the two. This course enables students to develop a wide range of transferable skills that are relevant to many degree courses and to employment.

What Will I Be Studying?

Each year of the course consists of two different modules. The AS year introduces students to the technical construction of film and how this is used to make meaning. It looks at the theories of genre and narrative and how these theories can be used to develop a greater appreciation of film. Students will also look at Hollywood and British cinema in an institutional context. In the A2 year students look at the messages and values that are communicated by world cinema. They can also explore the concept of the auteur director or other related issues in a personal research study. There is also the opportunity for film making or film screen writing which forms part of the coursework.
