The media plays a very big part in all of our lives. We can use the media for information, entertainment and role models. This subject explores the influence the media can have, the language it uses and the concept of audience. It is an interesting and demanding course that will encourage students to develop skills in many areas, including academic, analytical, creative, technical and research skills. Media Studies is an excellent choice for students who enjoy working in teams, are highly motivated and enthusiastic.
Media Studies is an excellent subject as preparation for any degree course in which communication skills are important. It complements most other subjects and students can go on to study Media/Communications/Journalism/Marketing/Public Relations – based subjects at degree level. It also develops a wide range of skills that are seen as desirable by employers as well as universities.
Each year of the course is divided into two modules. In the first year students will develop skills that will enable them to analyse and understand a range of media including television, radio, advertising, print media and computer games. It will also look at a range of theoretical perspectives including representation, genre, narrative, ideology and audience. The course aims to allow students to acquire the necessary skills to make sense of a world in which they are subjected to a multitude of media messages. The first year involves producing a radio podcast as part of the coursework. The second year will require students to develop skills further and produce a music video for coursework.
