Prospectus 2010
Modern Languages

(French, German, or Spanish)

We aim to enable you to fulfil your potential through developing your language skills in order that you may learn to communicate confidently whilst gaining an insight into the contemporary life of the country.

Future Prospects

Nowadays more and more branches of industry have an international dimension and an A or AS-Level in a language can help you take advantage of this. Some of our students might go on to work specifically in a language orientated role whilst others may find that their chosen career requires close connections with a foreign country.  A fair proportion of students go on to study a language with another subject such as Business or Law, while others continue their study of one or two languages in depth.

What Will I Be Studying?

Study is based on topics of contemporary interest in French, German and Spanish speaking societies. At AS level this includes Leisure and Lifestyles and the Individual and Society. At A2 Contemporary Culture and Society, the Media and the Environment are examined. Within each area you will develop your skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing, using authentic, up-to-date materials from newspapers, magazines, radio and TV. You will also have access to the Internet in the college learning centre. Lessons are conducted mainly in the foreign language, with weekly oral practice in small groups, with a native speaker assistant from the country.
