You should study this subject if you enjoy taking part in sport, and if you also find the theoretical aspects of the subject interesting (see content below). You should also study this subject if you wish to pursue a career in sport or physical education, or you wish to study for a degree in this area. Students who compete at county level, or above, are eligible to benefit from the Sports Scholarship Scheme (see PE staff).
A high proportion of our students choose to study PE / Sport at degree level. Possible careers include; PE Teaching (specialising at secondary level; B.Ed. or B.Sc. plus PGCE) Sports Coaching (full time / part time and temporary / permanent positions; to include sports
instructors and outdoor pursuits) Leisure Management / Sports Development (local government) Exercise Science / Health and Fitness (private sports clubs and gymnasiums; to include sports management positions) Sports Physio/ Sports Therapy / Sports Treatment and Rehabilitation from Injury (Private companies ) Sports Science and Technology (Sports industry firms – e.g. Nike, Adidas) Sports Event Management and Corporate Hospitality (Private companies ) The Police and Armed Forces; look favourably on sports degrees.
In your first year your course will consist of -
• Three theory areas, assessed by written examination, worth 60% of marks. These areas are; Anatomy and Physiology; Acquiring Movement Skills; and Socio-cultural studies.
• Participation in a wide variety of practical sports. You must choose two sports in which to be assessed, worth 30% of the AS marks. The 2 sports must be included on the list of approved sports from the OCR exam board, and you must not choose two sports from the same category.(e.g. Not 2 invasion games).
• You must complete an oral assessment on evaluating and planning for improvement of performance in your chosen strongest sport. This is worth 10% of the AS marks.
AS & A2
Health and Fitness; Free from long term injury and able to participate in practicals. Sporting; Evidence of sporting ability through school and club teams.
In addition to the normal college entry requirements; GCSE PE ; at least grade C required (if studied and taken at High School); B.Tec. Sport; at least a PASS (if studied and taken at High School).
This subject combines well
with a wide variety of other subjects, but science
subjects, and Biology in particular, are useful for
sports science degree courses and sports
physiotherapy courses.
