Theology and Philosophy are two of the most valued subjects within the university curriculum. Not only have they provided the bedrock of modern day scientific thought, but they continue today to provide some of the most thought provoking challenges to disciplines such as science, law, psychology, medicine and politics.
Students go on to study a variety of courses at university and enter a variety of different professions: psychology, law, medicine, health studies, politics, teaching, nursing to name but a few. Indeed the subject dovetails with most courses and it is highly valued by all professions, most importantly because it indicates the level of academic challenge a student is able to engage with.
Philosophy provides an opportunity to engage with some of the most challenging questions of human existence. From Plato and Aristotle through to some of the thoughts of contemporary philosophers, the course shows you how philosophical ideas have shaped the world we live in. The Theology side of the course looks at the origins of Christianity. It will show you how a tiny Jewish sect, living under the shadow of the superpower that was the Roman Empire, developed into the world’s largest religion - Christianity. Theology and Philosophy aims to promote an enquiring, critical, yet sympathetic study of some of the major beliefs and issues affecting our world today. This subject provides you with the training and skills to think independently, rationally and question what others might take for granted.
