Chemistry

Chemistry is an important science both from a career point of view and its importance in our everyday lives and, because of this, many students choose this challenging and interesting course. The course aims to develop both knowledge and ideas met at GCSE to enable students to understand the fundamental concepts in chemistry and to develop the skills needed to use these in new more challenging situations.

Future Prospects

Chemistry is an essential science for many courses such as medicine, dentistry and veterinary science but because it is closely linked with Physics and Biology it is a beneficial science to have when studying any science-based course in HE or following a science-based career.

What Will I Be Studying?

Students who choose the AS Chemistry course will study the first three modules for one year.

Module 1

Atoms, Bonds and Groups aims to develop ideas on atomic structure, bonding and periodic trends enabling students to formulate a stronger understanding of the fundamental ideas of the subject.

Module 2

Chains, Energy and Resources; these enable students to study the enormous range and diverse properties of carbon compounds. This module also introduces the ideas of rates and Energetics as fundamental factors affecting the rates of chemical reactions and how this is used to maximize output in industry.

Module 3

Practical Skills in Chemistry assesses practical and investigative skills developed within contexts encountered during AS Chemistry. This counts 20% towards the final mark at AS.  Students who choose the A2 Chemistry course will study the final three modules.

Module 4

Rings, Polymers and Analysis will present students with a deeper knowledge and understanding of how organic chemistry shapes the natural world and how organic chemicals provide many important materials.

Module 5

Equilibrium, Energetics and Elements will provide students with a quantitative study of physical chemistry.

Module 6

Practical Skills in Chemistry assesses practical and investigative skills developed within contexts encountered during A level Chemistry and accounts for 10% of the A2 course
