Supporting Success

At Holy Cross we enjoy one of the best sporting reputations throughout the North West and, increasingly, at regional, national and international levels. Our sporting teams and individuals consistently achieve a high degree of success, both competitively and recreationally, in a variety of sports.

Great Variety of Sports

We enter a large number of competitions through our affiliation to the North West Colleges league, sports governing bodies, and the Association of Colleges organisation.

Last year our students represented Holy Cross in 23 different sports at local, regional and national levels. More students represented Holy Cross in competitive sport than any other college in the North West of England.

Weekly Sports Events

Every Wednesday afternoon we field, three male and one female football teams, two netball teams, a mixed hockey team and a male rugby team. These teams compete in North West colleges and Association of Colleges competitions.

Other sports you can participate in include:

  • Athletics
  • Basketball
  • Vollyball
  • Badminton
  • Golf
  • Trampolining
  • Tennis
  • Table Tennis
  • Squash
  • Cross Country

Assistance

Holy Cross offers various means of sports assistance to help you:

  • Sports Scholarship scheme which provides some financial and timetabling assistance if you excel in a sport and gain selection at county level
  • Sports bursary scheme - providing financial assistance to enable easier access to training/travelling expenses etc.
  • Scholarship scheme developing with Heidleberg University in Ohio, USA
  • Level 2 Community Sports Leaders Award is available if you wish to complete voluntary work experience in schools or other sports organisations.

Annual Celebration

One of the highlights of the Holy Cross sporting calendar is the annual sports presentation evening held at the Bolholt Hotel in Bury each April.

Supporting your Future

Sport will strengthen and enrich your personal statements (for university applications), and Curriculum Vitae (for future employment applications). It demonstrates the qualities they may be looking for in an individual, for example; physical ability, being active and healthy, a willingness to commit, a sense of purpose, passion and enthusiasm, ability to work as part of a team or group, initiative and showing leadership when appropriate, and that you have non-academic interests.
