Information Technology

Overview

Information Technology (IT) is found in all walks of life, in teaching, marketing, accounting, banking are just a flavour of the professions that are today reliant on IT. The BTEC Nationals in IT is a Level 3 course, a reflection of the increasing importance of new technology.

What we’ll study

As part of this course you will study how organisations use social media, such as Facebook, to promote their business. This is an emerging and rapidly evolving market and employers see skills in this area as highly valuable.

The use of databases and spreadsheets are now fundamental in both business and our everyday lives, from storing contacts on a mobile phone, to the massive data warehouses storing internet search data and company transactions. You will go on to understand data modelling and how to create systems to manage data.

In addition, you will gain an understanding of all aspects of IT, including how digital devices work, communicating using IT, storing data on the Cloud and much more.

Your future

The skills you will develop during this course are practical and applicable, and favoured by employers and education establishments. Whether you are going on to higher education or you’re taking up a career direct from college, a qualification in IT will help your future prospects.

IT skills are increasingly a necessity for many courses. This qualification allows for a number of progression routes into higher education, including a university degree, or employment. The full two-year course is equivalent to an A Level and provides an excellent qualification in itself.

How you’ll be assessed

There are no formal written exams in your first year, but there will be assessments and assignments which must be successfully completed to achieve your certificate. Similarly, in the second year, one unit is internally assessed and the other is formally examined.
