Our Early Childhood course supports students to understand children’s development, socially, physically and intellectually. It also focuses on the expertise of adults who work with young children and how these adults support and nurture children. Key topics that you will study include constructs of childhood; the value of play for child development; the importance of creativity for young children; ethical research involving children; international approaches to early childhood education and care; and the development of policy and legislation in relation to children in their early years. The degree is relevant to students who wish to pursue professional qualifications in the field of education (within school early years settings, as well as, other education-based settings) or as a Teacher (following a PGCE course).
Our Education course takes the disciplinary approach. We give our students grounding in the core principles of the four disciplines that help us understand education: history, philosophy, psychology, and sociology. In the first two years of Education, we will provide you with core knowledge in all four of the key disciplines of education. In your final year, we will encourage you to make interdisciplinary connections to aspects of education that interest you and normally allow you to narrow your focus on two disciplines of your choice. This provides you with the opportunity to specialise in the areas.
