English Literature

Studying English provides you with the opportunity to engage with a wide range of texts from the medieval period to the present day. Although the primary focus is on the literature of the British Isles, other literatures written in English and in translation are also included. Some of the texts you will be studying have excited the interest of generations of readers, stimulating admiration, criticism, and sometimes indignation. The English programme will enable you to analyse the way texts are constructed. We will help you to communicate your ideas more effectively, both orally and in writing, and to develop skills in research, analysis, and critique. We hope that, in the process, you will develop a life-long enthusiasm for literature, as you gain a fuller appreciation of the ways in which different critical approaches to literature enrich and deepen our understanding.

Philosophy & Religion

By studying Philosophy and Religion you will learn how individuals, communities, and societies have approached the big questions of life, and how their choices have impacted upon the world around them. The Philosophy and Religion course explores aspects of ethical thinking across a range of religious traditions, and examines various philosophical approaches to the meaning of human existence and the question of God. A number of religious traditions will be studied, including Islam, Hinduism, Buddhism, Judaism, Christianity and African traditional religions. Each year you will follow two broad strands – one in Philosophy, the other in Religious Studies. Questions of ethics will be explored across both strands.
