What we’ll study

As a Film Studies student you will learn how to analyse the micro features of film. Cinematography, sound, editing, performance and the arrangement of scenery and props will all be examined. Linking this detail to the ways in which you feel about the characters and themes as spectators are all part of our film analysis.

In a similar way to English Literature, key contexts will be considered alongside critical approaches and debates.

The 11 films studied will range across the history of film, from the silent era onwards and be from different countries across the world, including the UK and the US.

There is also a creative component which offers students the chance to make a short film or write a screenplay for a short film, showcasing their learning about film as an art form.

You will also learn how the narrative has been structured and appreciate the artistic nature of film, particularly when considering the style of a particular director.

As a student with us you’ll be part of the Media and Film Department. We seek to offer courses that are dynamic, contemporary and above all interesting to students. We are a high performing department and achieve results that are amongst the best in the country. At the heart of learning is creativity.

Experienced teachers will deliver lessons that engage interest and challenge learners. Students will develop a variety of skills. This includes academic ability, research skills, the development of creative ideas, technical knowledge, team working and the ability to evaluate production work.

The department always seeks to gain involvement with the media and film industries. Regular visits are made to BBC North in Media City Salford and The British Film Institute in London.
