Overview

From Alfred Hitchcock to Bong Joon-Ho, Film Studies will introduce to you to the work of some of the finest filmmakers in history. We’ll dive deep into a selection of films that range across cinema history, and after developing your analytical skills, you’ll get the chance to put them into practice as you produce a short film of your own for coursework.

What we’ll study

We’ll follow the EDUQAS A-Level Film Studies specification. This is divided into seven different areas of cinema, across which we’ll study a total of eleven films. Areas covered include Classic Hollywood, Contemporary American Film, British Cinema, Global Film, Silent Cinema, Documentary, and Experimental Film.

Our approach to each film will primarily focus on the ways in which they employ the key elements of film form: cinematography, editing, mise-en-scene, performance, and sound. In addition, we’ll explore the influence of context, as well as applying a range of theoretical approaches that will enhance your understanding of the films studied.

Your future

Hollywood, baby! Maybe, anyway. Film Studies can lead down a range of academic avenues and career paths. Media and marketing degrees are popular destinations, while the combination of analytical, communication, and creative skills that you’ll develop on the course will open up a range of digital careers, and will give you competitive edge in the ever-evolving job-market of the 21st Century.

How You’ll be Assessed

Film Studies is, at heart, an essay-based, analytical approach to cinema. The course will culminate in two written exams, which will comprise 70% of your mark. The final 30% is accounted for by production coursework. For this you will choose between making your own short film (between 4 and 5 minutes long) or producing a screenplay and digital storyboard.
