Overview

As a student with us you’ll be based in the Media and Film department.

We are a high-performing department and achieve results that are amongst the best in the country. At the heart of learning is creativity. Experienced teachers deliver lessons that engage interest and challenge learners.

What you’ll study

As a student you’ll develop a variety of skills. This includes academic ability, research skills, the development of creative ideas, technical knowledge, team working and the ability to evaluate production work.

The department always seeks to gain involvement with the media and film industries. Regular visits are made to BBC North in Media City Salford and The British Film Institute in London.

Our students learn how to deconstruct a range of media texts that include television, film, radio, music video and web content.

You’ll establish an understanding of the function of the media and be able to place this knowledge into an academic and theoretical framework.

The aim of this course is to empower students to understand the role of the media in society.

It has a coursework component that involves creative and practical production work. This is designed to extend the understanding of how the media is constructed for an audience. Past students’ coursework has included radio broadcasts, print media, film and television trailers, music videos and vlogging content.

Your future

Students acquire a range of transferable skills through the study of media and film that are valued by many universities and employers. Media and film students tend to be highly effective communicators, work effectively with other people, are skilled at problem solving and being resourceful and have a high level of technical ability.

How you’ll be assessed

The course is assessed by 50% examination and 50% coursework. Coursework for the first year is focused on producing a piece of radio journalism. Students will plan, script, record and produce a radio broadcast. The second year will require students to develop practical skills in different areas of the media. It offers the opportunity for students to work with moving image projects such as music video, film trailers, advertising, or print media through which students can study the music industry, television drama and print advertising.
