Viktoriia takes the Torch for the Holy Cross Art exhibition

An A Level Art student who relocated to Bury from Ukraine has created all the branding and artwork for the Holy Cross College Art and Design Exhibition, which opens to the public in the Mill Gate Shopping Centre today (Friday 13th June).

Viktoriia Domushchi – who completed her GCSEs at The Heys School in Prestwich after moving from Ukraine – studies A Level Art and Design, Graphics and Photography here at Holy Cross College.

With a clear passion and talent for many types of Art subjects, Viktoriia has excelled in her two years with us, leading to her involvement in the branding for the exhibition.

All Art and Design students have their second year A Level project pieces displayed in the Torch exhibition, which is based across two Mill Gate units on Union Arcade from Friday 13th – Sunday 15th June.

Viktoriia said: “The past two years have been the best of my life. I’d like to thank everyone in the Art Department at Holy Cross for their support and welcome. Andy and the teachers have always encouraged me to embrace my creativity whenever I’ve been stuck with a concept, and I’ve loved creating the branding for the exhibition.

“We called it Torch as it shines a light on all the Art and Design students’ work. The star at the end of the torch signifies when you look at a light too closely and then it feels like you can see stars when you look away. The black represents the dark, which is being illuminated by the torchlight, but I also wanted to contrast it with a colour – I like pink, so it’s pink!

“Studying three Art subjects means I have quite a few pieces in the exhibition, and I can’t wait for my family and friends to come and see it. I hope everyone leaves Torch feeling inspired, as that’s how art makes me feel every day.”

Andy Davies, Art and Graphics teacher at Holy Cross, has taught Viktoriia Graphics for the past two years. He said: “Viktoriia has been absolutely brilliant in all three of her Art subjects, and that’s why she has taken the lead on the design of the exhibition branding and artwork.

“Her proud connections to Ukraine as her home come through in a lot of her project work, which is really heartwarming to see. I have no doubt she’ll excel at University, and we hope to see her back at college in the near future, sharing her experience with other students as they go through their Art journey with us at Holy Cross.”

Carina Vitti, Principal of Holy Cross College, said: “Our Art Department is one of the most successful, both at Holy Cross and in the country, and that is testament to our wonderful staff like Andy and students like Viktoriia. The exhibition is a great success every year – I congratulate everyone involved and look forward to seeing it for myself.”
