We have a record number of Holy Cross students involved in both Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh's (DofE) Awards, with 32 successfully completing their Gold qualifying expedition.
Every year, DofE inspires hundreds of thousands of young people, from all walks of life, to explore who they are, grow in confidence and develop the skills they need to successfully navigate life and building lifelong belief in themselves, supporting them to take on their own challenges, follow their passions, and discover talents they never knew they had.
Students celebrating their DofE successes at Holy Cross College
Sarah Saxon, regional officer for the DofE award scheme, recently joined us at Holy Cross to hand out certificates and gave thanks to students collecting awards.
Among those attending the awards was Helena, an alumni student, whose Silver award was confirmed just after the end of the last academic year.
We also welcomed current students to the awards presentation, including Lauren – who completed her Silver award to add to her previous Bronze award – and Leticia, who was picking up a Bronze award and is currently working on her Gold award.
Leticia said: "I definitely built up a lot of teamwork skills and had a lot of fun. I’d 100% recommend it to anyone."
Lauren said: "It was tough but I feel better for it now, and I’d definitely recommend it to anyone thinking about it. I met loads of new people, I gained so much confidence in myself and my skills and I really enjoyed being independent."
Sarah said: "DofE is open to anyone and everyone aged 14-24. It’s about your journey, what you're interested in, what you're passionate about and where you want to progress. If you want to make a valuable contribution to your community and the society around you, this is such a great opportunity to do that and be recognised by the DofE."
We also launched the hall of fame posters for both Gold and Silver awards, which show all students who have successfully completed their certificates through college.
These will be framed and displayed in college, and we hope to add a number of new names to these over the next 12 months.
