What is Core Maths and how could it enhance your learning?

9th Jul 2025

Core Maths is a one-year course which supports students who have chosen to study two or more of the below subjects and will enhance your performance in those.

We know from experience and evidence that Core Maths offers real value to students who have been recommended to take it (we’ve included their thoughts below).

But please remember: Core Maths is NOT compulsory and the final decision to add this to your timetable is yours.

Core Maths is designed, recommended and offered to support students who have chosen to study subjects from the list below, and it is most commonly taken up by those studying two or more from:

Economics, Chemistry, Biology, Psychology, Geography, Geology, Physics, Applied Science and Business, both A Level and BTEC.

As we’ve already mentioned, Core Maths may be recommended to enhance your studies and improve your performance in your chosen subjects.

If Core Maths is added to your timetable as a recommendation, the first sessions are designed to give you the chance to find out more about Core Maths, the staff delivering it, and how it will add value to your studies.

Will Core Maths be added to my timetable?

This depends on a few things – if you:

  • Have chosen to study two or more of the subjects above AND
  • Have not chosen to study Maths A Level AND
  • Achieve lower than a grade 7 in GCSE Maths

Then Core Maths could be added to your timetable as a recommendation to support your studies. This would be added to your timetable after Enrolment.

Reminder: If Core Maths is added to your timetable as a recommendation, the first sessions are designed to give you the chance to find out more about Core Maths, the staff delivering it, and how it will add value to your studies.

Core Maths is NOT compulsory.

What do current Core Maths students think?

We know from experience and the evidence below that Core Maths adds real value to students who have chosen two or more of the courses above.

Here is what our current Core Maths students tell us about the course:

“At the beginning, I was against doing another year of maths, but I stuck with it and ended up loving the subject. It truly has helped with my other subjects and their maths aspects.”  Niamh (Biology, Economics, Psychology)

“Core Maths was a useful subject to take as it helped me further develop skills in my other subjects, it also helped me understand important maths skills for my future.”  Kayanaat (Biology, Chemistry, Psychology)

“I was skeptical about taking on Core Maths in my first year, but looking back, it has really helped me in my other subjects.”  Ed (Economics, Business, Geography)

How much of my timetable will be Core Maths?

If Core Maths is added to your timetable as a recommendation, the course is timetabled for two double lessons per week (each of 90 minutes).

As it is a one-year course, you’ll only be required to attend Core Maths lessons in your first year at Holy Cross.

Core Maths is also worth 20 UCAS points, which can make a significant difference to university and apprenticeship applications.

Where can I find out more about Core Maths?

Core Maths is an exciting opportunity to enhance your studies and improve your overall performance in your chosen courses.

If Core Maths is added to your timetable, this is a recommendation and is NOT compulsory. We would encourage you to attend the first session to find out more about the course.
