One of the highlights of the day was the opportunity for students to work with petrographic microscopes — specialist equipment used by geologists to study rocks and minerals in detail.
This practical workshop allowed students to:
Seeing real geological phenomena under the microscope helped deepen their understanding of topics they’ve been studying, and gave them a sense of how scientific theory connects to real‑world practice.
Throughout the visit, students learned about the different pathways available in Geoscience — from environmental protection and natural resource exploration, to hazard management, engineering geology, and climate‑related careers.
Meeting university staff and seeing the facilities firsthand provided inspiration and reassurance for those considering studying Geoscience or related subjects at a higher level.
The visit offered a brilliant blend of learning, discovery, and future planning, leaving students with:
We’re incredibly proud of how our students represented the College and engaged with every aspect of the day. Opportunities like these play a vital role in helping young scientists imagine where their passion for the Earth can take them.
